Introduction Flashcards
Pharmacokinetics
Pharma - drug
Kinetics - movement
What the body does to the drug
Pharmacodynamics
The action of the drug on the body after a drug receptor complex is formed
Pharmacokinetics involve the following processes:
ADME
Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism & Excretion
Acidic drugs bind to
Albumen
Basic drugs bind to
Glycoproteins and lipoproteins
The main blood protein
Serum albumen
Prodrug
A drug administered in its inactive form and remains inactive until it is metabolized by the liver.
Inactive metabolite
Broken down by bile from gallbladder, carried to the intestines and excreted through the anus
Active metabolite
Transported through the bloodstream, some binds to plasma protein (albumen and globulins) and the rest that gets away circulates
Unbound drug
Amount that actually works. Bounds to receptors to treat
Bound drug
Useless portion because it is bounded to proteins
