Orphan drugs
Intended to treat diseases so rare that sponsors are reluctant to develop them under usual marketing conditions

An injury caused by taking a medication

Unwanted effects caused by the drugs
Pregnancy Category A
Controlled studies of pregnant women show no risk in first trimester
Pregnancy Category B
Animal studies show no risk, or animals show risk unconfirmed in humans
Pregnancy Category C
Animal studies show risk, caution advised, benefits may outweigh risks
Pregnancy Category D
Evidence of risk to human fetus, benefits may outweigh risks in serious conditions
Pregnancy Category X
Risk outweighs benefit
Paradoxical reaction/effect
Effect of drug opposite to the effect which would normally be expected
E.g., pain caused by pain relief medication
Idiosyncratic reaction
Unique response to a drug, a response that differs from the side effects commonly associated with the particular drug.
