Introduction Flashcards
The study of the physiological, evolutional, & developmental mechanisms of behavior & experience is a
Physiological explanation
What is monism?
The idea that the universe consists of only one type of being; Your thoughts & experiences are the same thing as your brain activity.
What is dualism?
The idea that minds are one type of substance & matter is another
A physiological explanation does what?
Relates a behavior to the machinery of the body, such as hormones & organs
An evolutionary explanation for behavior does what?
focuses on behavioral similarities among different species
An ontogenetic explanation does what?
Describes how a structure or behavior develops, such as certain genes giving an ability to hear
A functional explanation does what?
Describes why a structure or behavior developed the way it did. “What function does it serve?” Example: Trait variations that contribute positively to the organism’s fitness (survival & reproduction)
What do abolitionists believe in regard to the use of animals in research?
That all animals have the same right as humans
What do minimalists believe in regard to the use of animals in research?
Firm regulation on research. They tolerate certain types of research depending on the probable value of the research, animal type, & amount of distress to the animal
Where does perception occur?
In the brain
What did Nobel Prize winner Niko Tinbergen do?
He argued that no fundamental gulf separates humans from other animal species & that we are similar in many ways to other species
