Introduction Flashcards
Cite and localise the different lobes of the brain
From rostral to caudal : Frontal lobe Temporal lobe Parietal lobe Occipital lobe
Inside the structure there is also the insula lobe.
Cite and localise the three main fissure.
Inter-Emispheric fissure Sylvian Fissure (between the temporal and frontal lobe) Rollando Fissure (between parietal and frontal lobe)
What is the main function of the frontal lobe ?
Motor (premotor cortex) and higher functions/executive functions
What is the main function of the pariétal ?
Primary sensory cortex, somesthetic area, associative regions
What is the main function of the temporal lobe ?
Auditory cortex, emotions, memory
What is the main function of the occipital lobe ?
Vision
What is the main function of the insular lobe ?
Receive important information about the internal state of the body, also involved in pain and contain the gustatory cortex.
What is the Corpus Callosum ?
Structure of fibers that is the pathway between the two hemispheres. Also called comissure or decussation.
What is the hippocampus ?
Cortical structure, one of the oldest part of the cortical cortex, it has only three layers. Very important in learning more than in memory. Plays a role in emotions and spatial orientation.
What is the fornix ?
Made from axons of the hippocampus.
What is the Amygdala ?
Important in emotions, it is the slowest structure to emerge in the development. involved in fear.
What is the striatum ?
Made by the putamen and the caudate nucleus. Part of the basal ganglias. Inportant in the control and regulation of the movement.
What is the thalamus ?
Relay to and of the cortex.
What is the hypothalamus ?
Endocrine function, hormone secretion, involved in the vegetative system and the primitive behaviors.
What is the epiphysis ?
also called the pineal gland. It secretes melatonin which is the basis of the circadian cycle and important in ultradian rhythms.
