Intro to Vertebra Flashcards
Parts of the spine (regions) + #
5 regions Cervical-7 Thoracic- 12 Lumbar-5 Sacral- 5 fused Coccyx- 4 fused
3 Curvatures of the spine (what side are they concave from)
Kyphosis- anteriorly concave
Lordosis- Posteriorly concave
Scoliosis- lateral curvature
Primary + Secondary areas of spine and when do they develop
Primary- Thoracic + sacral kyphosis (development)
Secondary- Cervical lordosis (3-4m) Lumbar lordosis (10-18m)
General features of typical vertebra body
Epiphyseal rings on border compact
Centrum bone on inside is spongy
Posterior surface has foramen for basivertebral vein
General features of vertebral arch
has 2 pedical (R+L) and 2 laminae (R+L)
Pedicle features
Short, cylindrical, posterior bony projections
-in an articulated vertebral column, creats intervertebral foramina
Vertebral foramen contents
spinal cord, cauda equina (below l2), meniges and vessels
Verterbral processes (how many and types)
7
Spinous process- pos or pos inf. bony projections
Transverse process- 2 pos. lat. projections located at junction bw pedicles and laminae
Articular process- 4, 2 sup. 2 inf. (creates z joint)
Atrial blood supply of vertebra (segments)
C- vertebral arteries (1)
T- posterior intercostal arteries (1)
L- Lumbar artieries (5 pairs)
S- lateral sacral artery (1)
anterior, spinal and posterior for each part of vertebra
Venous drainage of verebra (3)
Anterior external vertebral venous plexus
Internal vertebral venous plexus (for basiverterbral)
Posterior external vertebral venous plexus
Schmorls node
Spinal stenosis
node- herniation of pulposis into the vertebral body
stenosis- narrowing of vertebral canal
