intro to the respiratory system Flashcards
what are the components of the respiratory tree?
Upper Respiratory Tract: oro-pharynx and larynx
Lower respiratory tract - conducting airways and respiratory zone (alveoli and terminal bronchioles)
how many times is the airway divided?
23 times
how many divisions make up the conducting airways?
first 16 divisions
how many divisions make up the respiratory zone?
last 7 divisions
what type of epithelium is found in the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles?
ciliated pseudo-stratified columnar
what controls the diameter of the trachea?
smooth muscle
what do the glands of the trachea do?
secrete mucus
what is dead space gas?
volume of gas breathed out of the conducting airways before alveolar gas is exhaled
what is the epithelium in the upper airways?
thicker pseudostratified columnar epithelium
what is the epithelium in the lower airways?
simple epithelium
why is all the epithelium of the airways covered in mucus?
to trap dust/microbes
what is the mucociliary elevator?
Cilia move mucus upwards towards the throat where it’s swallowed
what is the function of the C shaped cartilage?
stiffen the airways and prevent them collapsing
how does the cartilage change as the bronchi get bigger?
cartilage rings get thicker
what are type 1 alveolar cells and how much of the wall do they make up?
squamous
90%
