What is sociology?
-Study of social behaviour and human groups(society)
Society: a large group of people who live in the same area and who share a distinctive culture and institutions
Sociologists study…
-individual behaviour with a group
-behaviour of groups
-society as a whole
They attempt to:
-Understand the complex world around us
-Observe and conduct practical research into key issues and behaviour in order to try and explain why society functions the way it does
Socialization
-is the process through which an individual acquired a self-identity and the social skills for survival in society
-takes place during early life and continues as we age
-includes the physical, mental, and social skills you need to survive in your culture
-depends on the forces of hereditary and environment - heredity determines your physical make-up, environmental dictates how you develop and behave
Goals of socialization
-to learn by interacting with other people, groups, institutions, not books or direct instruction
-to ensure your existence and well being
-to ensure the preservation and stability of society
-to produce future generations that will continue to help society grow and improve in the future
-to pass on values(standards on what is right and morally acceptable)
-to pass on norms(that rules that indicate what people should do or how they should act
Agents of socialization
-Primary agent: the means by which an individual learns the basic norms and values of society during childhood (difference between right and wrong, manners, proper behaviour, gender roles)
* the primary agent in the family
-Secondary agents: the means by which an individual learns further social behaviours and norms
* secondary agents of socialization include peers, media, religion, school, and workplace
