Intro to group action of muscles and analysis of movement Flashcards
What are the different types of group muscle action?
Agonist.
Antagonist.
Synergists.
What is the role of an agonist muscle?
They are responsible for initiating and producing a desired action.
Agonist can be broken down into which 2 groups?
Prime Movers.
Assistant Movers.
What is the role of an antagonist muscle?
Muscle that directly opposes the agonist, but relaxes to allow the movement to take place.
Define Synergy?
A group of muscles and their different functions.
What are the 3 groups within synergy?
Stabilisers/Fixators.
Neutralisers.
Force-Couple.
Define Stabilisers/Fixators?
A muscle that anchors, steadies or supports a bone or body part in order that another active muscle may have a firm base on which to pull.
Define Neutralisers?
A muscle that contracts in order to counteract/neutralise an undesired action of another contracting muscle.
What are the 2 types of synergy within neutralisers?
True Synergy.
Helping Synergy.
What is meant by True Synergy?
A muscle/muscle group that contracts to prevent the unwanted movement of a two joint muscle.
What is meant by Helping Synergy?
Two muscles that share a common action and have their own second action antagonistic to that of the other.
Define Force-Couple?
The interaction of 2 or more muscles acting in different linear directions but producing a torque in the same rotary direction.
