Intro to B&B Flashcards
What is the name of the zygote division process?
Cleavage
At what stage do the morula and blastocyst form?
Germinal stage
At what point does the embryonic stage begin?
Following implantation
What is the process called that forms the embryonic disk?
Gastrulation
Name the three parts of the embryonic disk?
Ectoderm, Mesoderm and Endoderm
How is the neural tube formed?
- The embryonic disk develops unevenly
- Part of the ectorderm at the back of the embryo thickens and forms a plate
- The edges of the plate form ridges that curl towards each other
- The ectoderm folds in on itself and zips up
By day 28, the neural tube has closed and the front has developed into three interconnected chambers. What do these chambers become?
Forebrain, midbrain and the hindbrain
Name 2 neural tube defects
- Spina bifida
- Anancephaly
What causes Spina bifida?
failure of the closure of the neural tube, at the spinal cord level
What are the 2 main symptoms of Spina bifida?
Paralysis and limb deformation
What Vitamin can help prevent Spina Bifida during pregnancy?
B9
What causes anencephaly? and what is the result of this?
Failure of closure of he neural tube, generally leads to still borns
