Intro/Research method Flashcards
History before WW1
Focused on the machine, not the person
History between ww1 and ww2
focus started to shift to adjusting machine, slower development time
After ww2
research expanded to whole systems instead of one equipment
Ergonomics:
the study of designing that best fits the human body
Human factors:
the science of understanding the properties of human capability and applying to the development of systems/services
Human-Machine system diagram
Human: Perception -> cognition -> action
System: controls -> operation -> display
Independent variable
the variables that are manipulated(changed)
Dependent variable
The variable that is measured
Construct validity
does the measure actually measure what is intended?
Internal validity
are we actually measuring what we think we’re measuring?
External validity
Can the results be generalized to other settings?
ecological validity
do the behaviors actually reflect behaviors that actually occur in a natural setting?
gulf of execution
gap between user’s goal and ability to execute
gulf of evaluation
degree to which representations can be interpreted by the user
