3 major anatomic planes and meanings
coronal, transverse and sagittal
coronal plane
Coronal plane also referred as the vertical plane
divides the body into the anterior and posterior
transverse plane
also referred to as the cross sectional or horizontal plane
divides body into superior and inferior
sagittal plane
also called medial plane
divides body into right and left
a sagittal plane in the middle of the body is called the…..? and planes parallel to this line and right or left of it are called….?

anterior vs posterior and ventral vs dorsal
towards the top/head vs towards the rear/feet
superior vs inferior and cranial vs caudal
towards the middle vs away from the midline

close to point of attachment vs furthest from point of attachment
proximal vs distal
the human body is partioned into two main parts:
axial and appendicular
axial: head, neck and trunk comprising the main vertical axis of our body
appendicular: limbs appendages, those that attach to main body
3 parts of the thoracic cavity
right and left pleural cavities and mediastinum
what is in the mediastinum (median space)
heart, thymus, esophagus, and major blood vessels
term for parts on the same side of the body and for ones on opposite sides of the body
ipsilateral and contralateral
position when body is lying on its back and lying facing downward
supine- on back and prone on its stomach
