Intro Flashcards
What is biology?
The study of life
What are the different levels of organization or complexity of life? (6)
Cell < Tissue < Organ < Organism < Community
How do Biologist study life?
Through “scientific method” - the basis for scientific inquiry
Why study biology?
It helps you understand your body
It helps you become an informed citizen
It can open career opportunities
It can enrich your appreciation of the world
What are the types of data used for biology?
Quantitive = expresses in numbers Ex. Weight, height, PH Qualitative = physical characteristics Ex. Color, smell, texture
The scientific method consists of:
Observation Question Hypothesis Prediction Experiment Conclusion Communication to others
How do biologists study life?
The scientific method
What is a well designed experiment ?
It follows the scientific method
It has a controls group( something to compare to)
Has a single variable (1 thing being changed) everything else is constant
Has a large sample size
Cell theory:
All organisms are composed of cells, and new cells only come from pre existing cells
Homeostasis theory:
The internal environment of an organism stays relatively constant
Genes theory:
Organisms contained coded information that dictates their form, function, and behavior
Ecosystem theory:
Populations or organisms interact with each other and physical environments
Evolution theory:
All organisms have a common ancestor, but each is adapted to a particular way of life
Characteristics of a living thing
Living things are complex; composed of thousands of components Ex. Molecules
Living things are organized, made of_______
1 or more cells
