intro Flashcards
social psychology=
scientific study of how a person’s thoughts, feelings and behaviour are influenced by the real, imagined or implied presences of others
social influence=
the way in which behaviour can be affected by presences of others
(why do we conform? why do we obey authority? when do we help?)
social cognition=
how we process social information:
(how do we: form impressions? interpret others’ behaviour?)
social relations:
how do we interact with others (how do we form bonds? How do we feel about others?)
levels of analysis
-> culture +environment (economics+sociology_
–> others (social pscyh)
—–> self (clinical +personality)
5 big ideas of social psych
1- situations are powerful
2. we dont know why people do what they do:
3. we dont know what we dont know:
4. amazing how accurate our judgements are:
5. people have 2 fundamental motivations:
5 big idea: Idea number 1>situations are powerful (3)
- known situations can influence our perceptions of others in unexpected ways:
>situation others are in
(funeral/non-funeral & evaluation of ‘sadder’ for same
face if funeral (trope, 1986)
>situation we are in;
(weather- if sunny day, acknowledged skin cancer liklihoos more than if not sunny (lee, gino, staats, 2014)
5 big ideas: number 2: we dont know why people do what they do (3)
- fundamental attribution error= bias in attributing others’ behaviour to INTERNAL causes over situational
- actor-observer discrepency= perceive our own behaviour to be due to EXTERNAL influences but perceived others to be due to INTERNAL
- conscious experience is constructed & not always accurate> idea our ‘reality’ is the ‘true reality’> creating empathy gaps
5 big ideas: idea number 3: we dont know what we dont know
- we are unaware of own biases
Big idea number 4- amazing how accurate our judgements are
- adaptation= processing works best when fast, outside of awareness
- most are accurate due to automatic response ‘thin-slice’ judgements
Big idea number 5- people have 2 fundamental motivations
- people want to be liked & need to belong
- people want to be accurate, consistent & authentic (consistent in eyes of others & self)
cyber psych- features> (4)
