Intracranial Pressure Flashcards
Increased Intracranial Pressure (ICP)
Skull is a closed box with 3 elements; brain, blood, and CSF.
Brain accommodates to changes in ICP.
Changes due to blood pressure, intradominal pressure, intrathoracic pressure, posture, temperature, and oxygen levels.
Factors Affecting Cerebral Blood Flow
Carbon Dioxide- POTENT VASODILATOR
Oxygen
Hydrogen Ions
ICP Monitoring: Nursing Considerations
Neuro Exam
Monitor Site for infection.
Assess the site for CSF leaks.
Maintain nutritional status.
Prevent hypoxia and hypercapnia.
Pain, anxiety management.
ICP Monitoring
A catheter is inserted into the lateral ventricle.
Directly measures the pressure within the ventricles.
Can facilitate removal or sampling of CSF.
Allows for intraventricular drug administration.
