Hemorrhagic Stroke Flashcards
Hemorrhagic Stroke
Vessel integrity interrupted- bleeding into brain tissue.
Blood leaks into brain tissue.
Intracerebral Hemorrhage
Caused by elevated blood pressure.
Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH)
Caused by rupture of aneurysm or arteriovenous malformation (AVM).

Hemorrhagic Stroke Clinical Manifestations
“Worst headache of my life!”
Sudden onset of severe, crushing headache.
Nausea, Vomiting
Photophobia
Change in mental status- a direct correlation to increased ICP.
Hemorrhagic Stroke Diagnostic Studies
CT Brain - WILL SHOW BLEEDING QUICKLY!!
MRI (better for embolic or ischemia strokes)
Labs: May check coagulation studies if another disease or issue is present.
PT, PTT, INR
Hemorrhagic Stroke Complications
Cerebral Hypoxia
Decreased cerebral blood flow.
Seizures
Vasospasm
Nursing, Medical, and Surgical Interventions Hemorrhagic Stroke
Frequent Neuro Exams
Glasgow Coma Scale
Monitor for signs of increased intracranial pressure (ICP).
Nursing Interventions Hemorrhagic Stroke
Vitals, Neuro Check
Bedrest
Minimize patient anxiety.
HOB 15-30 degrees.
No enemas, avoid nausea and vomiting.
DVT prophylaxis
