What is the role of listening?
- allows person make sense of events/overcome feelings of shame/hiding. Catharsis
- respond with minimal encouragers- verbal & non-verbal, mirroring etc. Clarification
What are the purposes of open and closed questions?
Open: facilitate open discussion of a topic
Closed: Obtain specific pieces of information
What is paraphrasing and why is it used?
Rephrasing primary words/thoughts using own words. Used to encourage further discussion, emphasise content when emotions counterproductive- internal dialogue etc
What is reflection of feeling and why is it so important?
Paraphrase essential attitudes displayed by client. Can be expressed non-verbally e.g. through facial expression. It helps the client feel understood and helps understand relationship between feelings and behaviour.
What are some steps in reflecting feelings?
What overt feeling words have been used? What are implied? What words can describe feelings in similar level intensity?
What is summarisation and why is it used?
Collection of two or more paraphrases/ reflections that condense clients message .
- To tie together multiple elements of message.
- Can also refocus rambling 3. Review progress of therapy.
