What is the Health Consumer Participation Movement?

A

Came from two main sources:
1. the rights of consumer in capitalist system
2. Fundamental Christian ethic that each human life is equal
Movement of health care from “medicine prescribed” to “service provider”- power shift between provider and user.

A

rights of people with mental illnesses to be treated as people, not an illness. Rights to accurate info and collab treatment. Attempt to combat stigma.

A

Micro level: participation in clinical process-planning and treatment decisions.
Macro level: broader decisions, representative role incl planning and reform processes.

What is participation, consultation and tokenism?

A

Participation: Active shaping service/support/treatment direction/evaluation
Consultation: asked opinions or thoughts which may or may not be used to shape service
Tokenism: Having consumer representation on committees etc but voice not given any power
