Helping relationship Flashcards
What model is used for developing the interpersonal relationship?
2 stage model by Strong 1968.
- Therapist establishes power through 3 relationship enhancers
- Perceived qualities enable influence over client to elicit attitudinal and behavioural change
What 3 relationship enhancers are used to establish power?
- Expertness: competence, perception therapist can resolve concerns.
- Attractiveness: perceived similarity, friendly, reputation.
- Trustworthiness: Feeling client won’t be misled. Sincerity, openness, confidentiality- clients test trustworthiness though asking questions/requesting info
Is personal experience necessary?
No- don’t need to be a car to know how to fix
Acknowledge limitations of experience and ask about theirs. Don’t have to disclose experience if you have it (confidentiality doesn’t go both ways)
What are some things to consider why deciding how to sit in therapy?
Some cultures sit side by side. Children don’t like too much eye contact.
How do you display genuineness?
Supporting non-verbal behaviours, congruence- body language promotes openness.
How do you display positive regard?
understanding- work with how and what they believe, non-judgmental attitude- compassion, acceptance
What is the difference between sympathy and empathy and what should clinical psychs practice?
Psychs should practice empathy- understand people from frame of mind rather than own.
Sympathy= feeling for them/feeling sorry for them etc.
What is transference and how do you manage it?
Displacing feelings/attitudes onto therapist, applicable to others.
Gelso et al. 5 ways to work with it:
Focus of immediate relationship, interpret meaning of transference, promote insight/educate, self-disclosure
What is countertransference and how do you manage it?
Therapists emotional involvement in therapy interaction. May have atypical reaction to something said.
5 factors to manage:
self-integration, self-insight, anxiety management, empathy, conceptualising skills. Supervision useful tool.
