Q

external oblique muscles

A

Originates at the external surface of the lower eight ribs and inserts into the iliac crest, iliac spine, pubic tubercle, and linear alba. Acts to compress the abdomen and helps w/ forced expiration.

A

muscle that is deep to the internal obliques. It helps to compress the abdomen and depress the ribs

Q

rectus sheath

A

The connective tissue formed by aponeuroses of the transversus abdominis and the external and internal oblique muscles. It encloses the rectus abdominis.

Q

conjoint tendon (aka inguinal falx)

A

A structure formed from the lower part of the transversus abdominis muscle as it inserts into the crest of the pubis and serves as the medial part of the posterior wall of the inguinal canal. It protects a weak point in the abdominal wall, and if weak it can precipitate a direct inguinal hernia.

Q

linea alba

A

A tendinous median raphe between the two rectus abdominis muscles extending from the xiphoid process to the pubic symphysis. It is formed by the fusion of the aponeuroses of the external oblique, internal oblique, and transverse muscles of the abdomen.

Q

arcuate line

A

A horizontal line that demarcates the lower limit of the posterior layer of the rectus sheath, where the inferior epigastric vessels perforate the rectus abdominis. IT is normally about 1/3 of the distance from the umbilicus to the pubic crest.

A

blood vessels that arise from the external iliac artery above the inguinal ligament, then curve forward in the subperitoneal tissue and pierce the trasnversalis fascia, forming the superolateral border of Hesselbach’s triangle.
