Obsession
recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges or impulses that are experienced at some point during the disturbance as intrinsic and unwanted
Stalking
a pattern of repeated contact with a person that is unwanted and causes the person to reasonably fear for their safety or the safety of those known to them
Characteristics of Stalkers
mostly male (80-90%) older higher education levels former intimate partners interpersonal and mental health difficulties

Simple Obsessional Stalker
most common, prior relationships, male stalker - female victims, difficulty maintaining relationships
Love Obsessional Stalker
no prior relationship, mental health difficulties, misguided hope to establish relationship
Erotomania Stalker
believes already in relationship with victim
least likely to seek direct contact
Intimate Partner Violence
acts of physical, physiological and/or sexual violence and other forms of controlling behaviour against a current or former intimate partner
Battered Women Syndrome
the collection of physiological responses experienced by female victims of persistent IPV including depression, learned helplessness, powerlessness
Learned Helplessness
a psychological condition in which an individual learns to accept their current conditions or situations as unchangeable regardless of their actions
Cycle of Abuse Theory
abusive relationships exhibit a predictable cycle of behavioural characteristics in which abusive partners become increasingly tense, irritable, angry and psychologically abusive
Male Family-Only Assaulter
engages in abusive behaviour in the household
no generalized antisocial behaviour
poor coping/communication skills
no serious psychopathology
Male Dysphoric/Borderline Assaulter
engages in moderate to serious IPV
mental health problems
Dysphoria
