Q

characteristics of a theory

A
  • highlights specific concepts -> concepts within a theory are the categories of phenomena that are believed to be relevant to understanding an event, situation, or experience
  • describes how concepts are related (positive and negative associations, curvilinear association)
  • always incomplete – not as rich as the phenomenon itself, but incompleteness is useful as it focuses on the main trend
  • needs to be tested and supported by evidence (cannot be proved)

Q

social penetration theory

A

explains how information exchange among communicators functions to develop or sometimes disintegrate interpersonal r/s

  • the “onion model”

stages (Altman & Taylor, 1973):
orientation
- sharing superficial, public information about self

exploratory-affective
- increase in the breadth of topics that are discussed, a little bit in depth

affective -> going into personal layer
- interactions move fluidly and are more casual, more spontaneous

stable exchange

  • spontaneous, honesty, open broad
  • private self is disclosed

social penetration is accomplished through self-disclosure

  • purposeful process of revealing info about oneself
  • increases intimacy
  • involves rewards and risks

Q

uncertainty reduction theory

A
  • initially developed to explain initial interaction among strangers
  • later developed to more established relational contexts

uncertainty (assumed to be undesirable) -> ambivalent, undesirable state

uncertainty: having a number of possible alternative predictions or explanations (Berger & Calabrese, 1975)

uncertainty reduction: making sense of something to increase our ability to accurately predict or explain

theorems

  • communication between strangers decreases uncertainty
  • low levels of uncertainty increases intimacy
  • high levels of uncertainty increases information seeking behaviour
  • similarity reduces uncertainty -> less need for information seeking behaviour
17
Q

politeness theory

A

assumption

  • each individual has “face” -> public self-image that every member wants to claim
  • rational capacities -> using different tools to achieve communication goal

positive face
- positive and consistent image people have of themselves, and their desire for approval and appreciation
negative face
- the basic claim territories, personal preserves and right to non-distraction ; freedom from imposition

politeness strategies:

  • satisfying positive face
  • satisfying negative face
  • mitigating impact of FTAs (FTAs vary in importance depending on power, distance, rank)
