Internal factors on Gender differences Flashcards
Feminisation of Education
boys might even feel intimidated as they are being raised in an environment that specifically encourages girls. There are more female than male teachers, especially in primary schools, which means that boys don’t have male role models to look up to
Changes to teaching learning & Assessments
GCSEs and Coursework:
Mitsos and Browne argue that girls are more likely to succeed in coursework. This is because of their gender identity.
Elwood argue that it is unlikely that this is the only reason for the gender gap between boys and girls.
Impact of gender role models
There has been an increase in female teachers and so they act as a positive role model.
They are likely to be important role models which means that girls look up to them to do well in the education system
Laddish Subcultures
collective, boorish or misogynistic behaviour by young heterosexual men, particularly university students, leads to underachievement
Teacher expectations
teachers have lower expectations of boys and are less likely to discipline them for minor infractions (due to laddish behaviour). boys given more negative attention
Gender Domains
Tasks that girls see as their territory and whats boys see as their territory. Girls and boys are more confident when what they are doing is in their gender domain. For example in math, if the questions involves health and nutrition girls would excel and if its car related boys will excel
Male Gaze
the way male pupils look girls up and down, seeing them as sexual objects and making judgements about their appearance
Gendered Subject imagery
The experience of a subject, including the gender of the teacher and the dynamics of the group, can shape one’s perception of whether it is a subject for girls or for boys. While some subjects are neutral and attract an equal number of male and female students, most subjects show a gender divide
Francis
the schooling process reinforces and reproduces gender identities; fitting in at school often involves adopting gender-appropriate behaviour linked to gender stereotypes
