Q

Define:
Open-enrolment
Formula funding
Exam league tables

A

open enrollment: parents can send their child to any school of their choice
formula funding: all schools get an amount of money from the gov per students (£3k) More students=more money, compete
Exam-league tables: published anually to show the % of pupils who gain 5+ A* -*C grades. Schools w/ high % of students attract more= more money

Q

What did Gillborn and Youdell find about how marketisation affects the achievement of MC+WC students?

A

A-C economy= a system which schools ration their time + resources on students who are most likely to get grades C/5 and above (to beast league tables)
Educational triage: sorted into 3 groups = pass anyway, hopeless cases + borderline = WC underachieve. However, this is deterministic + outdated as grading system and exam league table system has changed (9-1 + based on progress)

Q

What did Bartlett find about how marketisation affects the achievement of MC+WC students?

A

Cream-skimming: Top schools are able to select the top students (based on SATs + teacher reports due to larger numbers of applicants) –> tend to be MC
Silt-shifting: Don’t accept low SATs results + SEN. WC go to lower ranked schools
However parents have open-enrolment (the right to choose to go to any school)

Q

What did Gewirtz find about how marketisation affects the achievement of MC+WC students?

A

Home-schools contracts: contracts which parents have to sign in order to send child to that school. Found higher ranked schools have more demanding contracts e.g financial costs + helping child with HW. Puts of WC, so MC accepted into top schools, leaving behind WC to go to lower ranked schools. Appeals to MC parents. Criticism= open enrolment

Q

What did Ball find about how marketisation affects the achievement of MC+WC students?

A

Instead of spending more money on students, top schools spend money on advertising in order to attract MC parents = more students so more money (formula funding) However this could create competition, so schools get better (include lower + typically WC schools)
