MC children receive symbolic capital from teachers due to their habitus (lifestyle), whereas WC receive symbolic violence = worthless. WC develop Nike Identities & given symbolic capital from their peers –> feel superior.
Girls develop hyper hetero-sexualised femanine style. However if they mess up on this, they commit social suicide as they have been margenalised from both their peers + teachers
What did Ingram research & find about Class Identities + Achievement?
Researched 2 groups of WC Catholic boys in a highly deprived neighbourhood in Belfast. One group passed 11+ and went to grammar school, they other failed and went to state school. Group who failed 11+ had an intense feeling of belonging due to neighbourhood of dense networks of family + friends. Other group, however, experienced great pressure to fit in, as they had the tension of choosing between WC area + MC peers at school (mufty at school demonstrated this). choose either worthlessness at home or at school
What did Evans research & find about Class Identities + Achievement?
21 high achieveing WC girls (A/A*) Could have applied to top schools, however they didn’t due to collectivisation. Didn’t want to break WC habitus.
