What is Labelling ?
To label someone is to attach a meaning or definition to them.
What do teachers normally label black and Asian pupils as ?
Studies show that teachers often see black and Asian pupils as being far from the ideal pupil image. For example , black pupils are often seen as disruptive and Asians as Passive.
What does negative labels of ethnic minority pupils lead to ?
Negative labels of ethnic minority pupils may lead teachers to treat ethnic minority pupils differently , which disadvantages them and could result in their failure

How did Teachers stereotypes of Asian pupils affect them ?
Teachers assumed that the Asian pupils would have a poor grasp of English so left them out of class discussions or used simplistic , childish language when speaking to them.
Asian pupils also felt isolated when teachers expressed disapprovals of their customs or mispronounced their name
The effect was that Asian pupils especially girls were marginalized - pushed to the edges and prevented from participating fully
What is the ideal pupil identity ?
Ideal pupil identity is a white , middle class , masculinized identity with a normal sexuality . This pupil is seen as achieving in the right way through their natural ability and initiative
What is the Pathologized pupil identity ?
Pathologized pupil identity is an Asian “ deserving poor “ feminised identity , either asexual or with an oppressed sexuality. This pupil is seen as an overachiever because of their culture , who succeeds through hard work rather than their natural ability
What is the Demonized Pupil Identity ?
Demonized pupil identity is a black or white working class , hyper-sexualised identity. This pupil is seen as unintelligent , peer led , culturally deprived and an underachiever
While successful , what were chinese students seen as ?
Chinese students were seen as having achieved success in the wrong way - through hard work rather than natural individual ability and as over achieving
What are 2 evaluation points of labelling and pupil responses ?
- doesn’t blame the child’s home background like cultural deprivation theory
-danger of assuming that once a pupil has been labelled , pupils automatically fall victim to self fulfilling prophecy and fail

individual racism results from prejudiced views of individuals such as teachers

Institutional racism is discrimination that is built into the way institutions such as schools operate #.
What is the critical race theory ?
The critical race theory sees racism as an ingrained feature of society. This means that it involves not just the intentional actions of individuals but more importantly institutional racism.
What is meant by ethnocentric curriculum ?
Ethnocentric Curriculum is thus a curriculum which reflects the culture of one ethnic group - usually the dominant culture
