interviews 60 high school teachers,they judged according to how closely they fit the ideal pupil,m/c tend to be seen as the closest to the image.
what did hempel jorgensen find?
her studies found teachers have different notions of ideal pupils,in a w/c school with behavioural issues the ideal pupil was seen as quiet and obedient
What did dunne and gazely find?
found schools produce w/c underachievement, interviews 9 schools and found they normalised w/c underachievement whereas they believed they could overcome underachievement of m/c pupils.e.g w/c entered for foundation m/c given extra work
what did rist study?
studies us nursery schools,judgements were made by the teacher,the m/c children of neat appearance were seated at the front near the teacher they received more attention whereas the w/c children were sat at the back and were given low level reading books
what did rosenthal and Jackson find?
did a study on self fulfilling prophecy and labelling,they told teachers they had a test that would identify brightest students,whereas it was a standard IQ test,they chose 20% at random and told the teachers they were spurters,they came back a year later and found 47% of those students made significant progress
What did Willis find
did a study of 12 lads at a high school(w/c) found they had a counter school subculture and had low expectations of future employments so school was a waste of time for them,they valued a lack of respect for authority
What did Ball find?
studied a comprehensive that abolished streaming which decreased polarisation and anti school subcultures but teachers continued to differentiate and label students according to their social class showing even without subcultures and streaming the class difference in achievement continues due to negative labelling of pupils
what did woods identify
there are not only 2 subcultures being pro and anti school but instead 4.

does not explain why teachers label but blames them for it,deterministic
How can you criticise marketisation of education
Gillborn and Youdell- it contributes to the gap between w/c and m/c children,due to the a-c economy where schools allocate time and resources into those they perceive as being able to get 5 a-c whom tend to be m/c.
What does Bartlett say?
when pupils apply to schools it allows them to cream skin-pick the best ability students and silt shift-reject those with learning or behavioural issues usually w/c students high achieving schools continue to get good results as they make sure they have the best students e.g m/c
what does Gewirtz say about selection and attracting parents
schools attract m/c parents through home school contracts if they’re wordy and demanding of parents w/c parents are likely to be put off and not apply
what does Ball say bout finance?
he says that schools spend money on expensive brochures and professional websites in order to attract parents at the expense of actually investing in teaching resources
What did Evans find?
studied a group of w/c girls from s.l doing their a levels and found they’re reluctant to apply to oxbridge and the few who did apply felt a sense of not fitting in,they also had an strong attachment to their locality
