Boys underachievment Flashcards
What does Sewell say
education system does not encourage masculine traits such as competitiveness and leadership but rather nurtures and values traits such as methodical working and attentiveness this makes boys feel like education is not for them as they do not fit in
how can you criticise sewell
read studied a primary school and found both male and female teachers use the disciplinarian discourse to ensure students behave which is a masculine method therefore education is not feminised
Poor literacy skills
studies show that most of reading is done by mothers so the activity becomes associated with femininity so boys reject it
decline in traditional mens jobs (manafacturing)
since 1980s there has been a decline this has led to a crisis of masculinity as men are unsure of what it is to be a man
what did Epstein find
high achieving w/c boys were labelled as swots by their peers and tend to be harassed and subjected to homophobic abuse
what did francis find
boys try to avoid being labelled swots as education achievement is seen as feminine so they do little or no classwork
what did myhill and jones find
Carried out interviews with 112 students on perceptions of whether teachers treat boys and girls differently, they found boys are treated more negatively
Lack of positive male role models
There is a lack of positive male role models large number of boys are being fought up in the 1.5 million female headed lone parent families at school only 16% of teachers are male therefore boys have no role model to look up to as an example
How can you criticise lack of role models
Read-studies primary schools and the way teachers discipline students she found both male and female use the masculine disciplinarian discourse to ensure students behave showing schools hve not become feminised
Leisure
Boys leisure pursuits such as football and console games do not contribute to developing good literacy skills on he other hand girls having a bedroom culture staying in and talking to friends develops literacy and listening and speaking skills
