researchers and policies for equal policy opportunties opportunities
gist/wise, national curriculum, boaler
what is gist/wise
Policies such as GIST/WISE - increased female interest, motivation & performance in science and technology encouraging girls to pursue careers in non-traditional areas
what did the national curriculum do
The national curriculum (1988) also removed on source of gender inequality making girls and boys study mostly the same subjects.
positive role models in school
There has been an increase in the proportion of female heads, these women may act as a role model for girls. Conversely there is a shortage of male primary school teachers, so boys may lack role models.
researchers for gcses and coursework
mitsos and browne, gerard
what did gerard argue
Gorard (2005) The gender gap in achievement was fairly consistent from 1975 to 1989 when is increased sharply, this was the year that the GCSE was introduced and coursework in most subjects.
Gorard concludes that the gender gap in achievement is a product of the changed system of assessment rather than any more general failing of boys However, recent changes have got rid of coursework and girls are still improving despite this.
what did mitsos and browne argue
Mitsos and Browne (1998) claim girls work harder, are more conscientious, spend more time on homework, are better organised, and are more likely to meet deadlines than boys. They also add that females concentrate more in class and are more willing to learn.
researchers for teacher attention
swann and francis
what did swann argue
found that boys dominate class discussions whereas girls prefer group work and are better at listening and cooperating. This is favoured by teachers who respond more positively to girls.
what did francis argue
found that although boys received more attention, they were disciplined more harshly and felt teachers picked on them and had lower expectations of them.
