palmer
what are material deprivation statistics
- almost half of all ethnic minority children live in low income households compared to a 1/4 of white children
- ethnic minorities are twice as likely to be unemployed compared to whites
- almost half of bangladeshi and pakistani workers earned under £7 per hour compared to 1/4 of white british workers
who is the researcher for asian family structures and what did he say
lupton - adult authority in asian families is similar to how schools operate. can cause families to be stress ridden - controlling children too much therefore it can be positive and negative
who is the researcher for afro-carribean family structures and what did he say
moynihan - headed by a single female parent - less time to support.
what do murray and sewell suggest about afro-carribean families
- murray - lack of a positive male role model leads to underachievement of some minorities
- sewell - black students do worse than asians because asians study more whereas black people are more instilled with pop culture such as mtv
what attitudes do black pupils have according to cultural dep theorists
socialised into a subculture with a fatalistic live for today attitude
researcher for language spoken by afro carribeans , what do they say
berelter and engleman - language spoken is inadequate for educational success, especially by low income black families (ungrammatical, disjointed and incapable of expressing abstract ideas)
why are pupils having english as an additional language disadvantaged according to language theorists
children with eal may be held back educationally.
evaluation: official statistics do not show this as a major factor as first language students were only 3.2 points ahead in gaining 5* to C passes
who is the researcher for racism in wider society and what does he say
mason - discrimination is persistent and leads to social exclusion and worsens poverty faced by ethnic minorities, such as being forced into substandard housing
researcher for discrimination in the workplace
wood et al found 1/16 ethnic minority applications were offered an interview compared to 1/9 white applications
weakness - blaming victim
too readily blames people for own educational failure. instead of a deprived culture schools may be to blame for failure
weakness - generalise
arguments generalise and are too deterministic. assume most afro carr/bangladeshi/pakistnai households suffer from above deprivations and will inevitably be passed on
weakness - focus on ethnic minority
most research focusing on ethnic minorities - however white wc also underachieve. may be because they have lower asipirations than many other ethnic groups - may be a result of white working class culture including parental support.
