DCSF (2007) suggest that the gender gap is due to poorer literacy skills of boys, it is thought that parents may spend less time reading to their sons.
In addition to this Boys’ leisure interests don’t tend to encourage language and communication skills whereas girls’ ‘bedroom culture’ does, boys more likely to be socialised into crime and deviance
researcher for globalisation and decline of traditional male jobs
Mitsos and Browne
what did mitsos and browne argue
Globalisation and decline of traditional male jobs Since the 1980’s there has been a decline in industry as a result of the globalised economy.
Mitsos and Browne also point out that there has been a corresponding decline in the number of ‘male’ jobs, especially semi-skilled and unskilled jobs.
They suggest that this had led to a male identity crisis and that therefore many young working class youths see little point in valuing educational success.
