Communication Channels
The route which information in a business may travel along.
Downward Communication
Passing messages from the top to bottom of an organisation.
Upward Communication
Passing messages from the bottom to top of an organisation.
Horizontal Communication
Passing messages between employees within the same layer of the organisation hierarchy.
Internal Communication
Communication between members inside a firm.
External Communication
Communication between third-parties to a firm such as customers, authorities.
Formal Communication
Use of recognised channels when communicating.
Informal Communication
Use of non-approved channels when communicating.
Face-to-Face Communication
Advantages: immediate feedback, saves times, new ideas can be generated.
Disadvantages: record of message unkept, non-relevant info included, limits number reached.
Written Communication
Advantages: reach variety of different people, flexible, can be used to distribute and collect information
Disadvantages: can be easily miscommunicated, takes time and effort, difficult for employees to organise.
Electronic Communication
Advantages: message received instantly, can be used for customer service, information is up-to-date
Disadvantages: may not reach older/younger audiences, can be ignored, hackers get hold of sensitive information.
