What is Leeway space?
The size differential between the primary posterior teeth and the permanent posterior teeth. Usually the sun of the primary tooth widths is greater than their successors
How much leeway space is there approximately in upper and lower arches?
- 5mm per side in the lower

How often should an RME be turned?
Twice daily
How much expansion does a RME achieve?
0.5 mm a day
When should a patient be reviewed after fitted an RME?
10 days
How is an RME different to other appliances that expand?
- appliance induces bone formation to expand
* other appliances work by tipping maxillary buccal segment teeth
What is a hyrake appliance used for?
To stop persistent digit sucking
What are the clinical signs of a thumb sucking habit?
- increased overjet
- asymmetric anterior open bite
- posterior crossbites
What duration per day is a habit required to bring about change in tooth position?
6 hours a day
An open bite associated with a thumb habit often resolves if the habit is stopped before ?
The permanent dentions comes through age 6
What are typical signs of a patient who sucks their thumb?
- narrowing of maxillary arch
- posterior cross bite
- increased overjet
- asymmetric open bite
- class II buccal segments
