inter-relationships Flashcards
vitamin A,C,E
anti-oxidants, work together to neutralise free radicals which cause irregularities in cells and tissues which can cause some cancers. found in fruits and veg such as mangoes carrots and oranges
vitamin C, iron and folic acid
iron found in food is ferric iron which cannot be absorbed by our body, vitamin c changes ferric iron in ferrous iron which our bodies can absorb and use. folic acid is important is important if iron is lacking as it will improve red blood cells and prevent anemia
calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D
calcium and phosphorus work together to create calcium phosphate which gives bones and teeth their hardness. vitamin D controls how much calcium we absorb so if no vitamin D is present then no calcium will be absorbed from the food we consume. if calcium levels are low in the blood then the body will take calcium from our teeth and bones which can lead to osteoporosis and dental caries
