7 stages of food product development Flashcards
concept generation (stage 1)
initial planning stage of developing ideas for new products
allows manufacturer to collect a wide range of ideas and ensure product is unique
concept screening (stage 2)
consider the ideas, keep the best ideas and discard the others. move from initial ideas to definite ideas
allows manufacturer to develop a specification that will be used throughout the development process
prototype production (stage 3)
an example/specimen of what the product will look like
developed and measured against the specification
can be modified or rejected
allows manufacturer to further refine the product and reduce risk of developing an unsuccessful product
product testing (stage 4)
product is then tested on consumers e.g specific age group, social group, tasting panel in controlled conditions
allows the manufacturer to make the product better based on consumer opinion
first production run (stage 5)
mass production of item that can then be assessed
quality assurance will check to products to ensure uniformed standards during manufacturing
this is important because it affects other stages for example if ingredients need to be changed then so will the label of product
marketing plan (stage 6)
how the product will be advertised and sold
allows product promotion techniques to be discussed
this is when manufacturer will set price of product which is important as they must ensure that the price is suitable for their attracted market
