Intellrctual development Flashcards
Sensory-motor stage
Age: 0-2
-Learn object performance
-egocentric
-learn through senses
Egocentrism
Only seeing from your perspective
Object performance
Ability to understand if something exists even if it’s out of sight
Pre-Operational
Age: 2-7
-Engage in Symbolic play (lego)
-Fail mountain experiment
-Don’t think logically
Symbolic play
Playing make belief
Concrete-Operational stage
age: 7-11
-develope logical thoughts
-decentertice
What’s Piagets theory
Cognitive development: suggests that children move through 4 stages of mental development
Children should be able to discover things for themselves through spontaneous play
Decentration
A child is no longer egocentric
Criticisms of piaget
Hughes: the reason children failed the three mountain task was because they simply didn’t understand it
- Vygotsky emphasise the importance of interacting with other people, “ zone of proximal development” - what a child already knows plus the interaction with an another knowledgeable person
-Used his won children for the study
-May underestimates children capability’s
2 Evidences of piaget theory
Mountain experiment
Conservation experiment
Language acquisition
Chomsky’s theory: All children learn language, the same
Chomskys stages of language
1) linguistic stage: 12-18 months (dadda)
2) holophrases: 12-18
3) Telegraphic stage: 18-24 (want tea)
4) Virtos errors: 2-4
Language acquisition device
A hypothetical tool in the brain that allows humans to learn languages
Universal grammar
All languages have a common structure
Chomsky’s evidence:
•Languages are complex, yet they need to lessons to understand
• all children make the same mistakes (dadda goed to work)
• all children, no matter what country learn in the same sequence
