Emotional development Flashcards
What’s the difference between Attachment and Bonding
Attachment: Complex (eg: close proximity, comfort in times of distress, main care giver)
Bonding: Basic needs
What is Bowlby’s theory
He linked the importance of social and cognitive development to the child’s relationship with their mother.
Triggers for poor attachment
-Premature
-post-natal depression
-Foster care
-Disability
Mary Ainsworth
Expanded Bowlby’s theory, states that a child’s experiences can lead to 3 types of attachment:
1) Secure: resulted in good emotional development
2) avoidant: resulted in building walls around themselves
3) ambivalent: resulted in not feeling secure, worried, seeking reassurance
Mary Ainsworth evidence
Strange situation: Investigated attachment security in children, involved 8 episodes of the mother, child and stranger meeting, separated, reunited
Bowlby’s evidence:
eg: If a child cries over a toy he doesn’t like, if the mother removed this toy and comforts him, he will stop crying
Criticisms of bowlby théorie
Michel Rutter argued, material deprivation didn’t always end with long term side effects
