A

Grey matter/outer bark. Controls higher functions regarding sensory perception, motor, spatial. Also conscious thought, language.
Bird DVR is similar – used to solve problems

Crows & Facial Recognition

A

Captured and tagged birds with mask on. Birds recognize the mask years later and attack that person (don’t attack other people or other masks).
Still happens 10 years later, when none of the original birds are left – information was passed on.

Mirror Test (Animal Examples of Fail and Pass)

A

put paint on forehead, then put animal in front of a mirror. If the animal reaches for its own forehead, it recognizes itself and is deemed self-aware.
Pass: dolphins, elephant, some birds, cleaner wrasse fish, great apes
fail: monkeys, dogs, cats

A

Rats rely more on instinct and a bit of learned behavior. Often picks between 2 behaviors.
Primates show more complex problem solving, can take in positive and negative factors at once and integrate them

A

the idea that social complexity has driven the evolution of cognitive abilities in animals. The hypothesis suggests that social competitors developed strategies to gain social and reproductive success, such as: Deception, Manipulation, Alliance formation, and Exploiting others’ expertise.

Children were told not to peek at a toy, then left alone. Many peeked, then told tester that they didn’t. Children who lied have a higher verbal IQ.
