Integumentary System (Anatomy) Flashcards
What are the functions of the integumentary system
-protection
-body temperature regulation
-cutanoues sensations
-metabolic functions
-blood reservoir
-exertion
how does the integumentary system provide protection
-3 types of barries
-chemical
-physical/ mechanical barriers
-biological barriers
how does the integumentary system provide chemical protection
-Low pH secretions (acid mantle) and defensins retard bacterial activity
-Bodies natural antibiotic
how does the integumentary system provide Physical/mechanical barriers
-keratin and glycolipids block most water and water- soluble substances
-Limited penetration of skin by lipid-soluble substances, plant oleoresins, organic solvents, salts of heavy metals, some drugs
-Epidermis is packed with keratin (protein) its in dead cells
-Glycolipid is like glue between all of the cells
-Semipermeable boundary created with these two, protects our insides from leaking out of us topical ointments
-Think of an umbrella, keeps fluids out and in
how does the integumentary system provide biological barriers
- dendritic cells, macrophages, and DNA (turn UV rates into heat just DNA)
how does the integumentary system provide body temperature regulation
-Insensible sweat is when you are always sweating but it is not perseptable
- We do this about 16 oz. sensible perspirations is how you sweat when you work out .
how does the integumentary system provide cutaneous sensations
-Temperature, touch and pain
-Pain receptors are exaggerated sensations
how does the integumentary system provide metabolic functions
Synthesis of (inactive) vitamin D precursor and collagenase(breaks down collage)
how does the integumentary system provide a blood reservoir
Storage of blood (Up to 5% of the body’s blood volume)
how does the integumentary system provide exertion
Nitrogenous wastes and salt in sweat
what are the 2 layers of skin
1.Epidermis –superficial
2. Dermis –middle/ deep
*Hypodermis (superficial fascia)
