Integumentary System Flashcards
Layers of human skin
epidermis and dermis
Layers of epidermis
Stratum Cornem Stratum Lucidum Stratum Granulsum Stratum Spinosum Stratum Basale (Stratum Greminativum)
Layers of dermis
Stratum Papillare
Stratum Reticulare
What does the Integumentary system do?
protects from injury, fluid loss, and microorganisms; regulate body temperature and fluid balance and provides sensation
What is in the Integumentary system comprised of?
hair, skin, nails
Stratum Corneum
outermost layer of epidermis, also called the horny layer
Stratum Lucidum
clear layer of the skin (part of epidermis) that is normally only found on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet
Stratum Granulosum
part of epidermis, granular layer of cells that accumulate to types of granules; keratohyalin and lamellated granules
Stratum Spinosum
part of epidermis, composed of prickle cells
Stratum Basale (Stratum Germinativum)
part of epidermis, deepest of the five layers, made of basal cells
Stratum Papillare
part of dermis, thin superficial layer interlocked with the epidermis
Stratum Reticulare
part of dermis, thick layer of dense irregular connective tissue
What does the dermis contain?
vessels carrying blood and lymph, nerves and nerve endings, glands, and hair follicles
Structures of the hair
follicle and shaft
papilla
blub like projection at base of follicle
inner sheath of follicle
ends at opening of the seabaceous gland, which secretes sebum
follicle outer sheath and muscles
muscles, called the arrector pili, attach to the outer sheath and causes hair to stand up when it contracts
shaft of hair
composed of keratin in three layers, the medulla, cortex, and cuticle. pigment calls in the cortex and medulla give hair its characteristic color
what parts is the nail divided into
root, nail bed, nail plate, cuticle, perionuchuim, and the hyponychium
root of nail
aka germinal matrix, lies beneath the skin behind the fingernail and extends several mm into the finger, produces most of the volume of the nail and nail bed, its edge is the white crescent shape structure called the lunula
nail bed
aka sterile matrix, extends from the edge of the lunula to the hyponychium, contains the blood vessels, nerves, and melanocytes (melanin-producing cells)
nail plate
the actutal fingernail, made of translucent keratin. blood vessels underneath give the nail its pink appearance;the grooves along the nail anchor the nail to the nail bed
cuticle
aka eponychium, between the skin of the finger and the nail plate that fuses the skin of the finger to the nail plate
perionychium of nail
aka paranychial edge, the skin that overlies the nail plate on its sides
hyponychium
the junction between the free edge of the nail and the skin
