Integumentary System Flashcards
Integumentary System
Consist of skin, hair, nails, glands, and sensory receptors
Epidermis (Outer Layer)
Stratified squamous epithelium
Dermis (Inner Layer)
Thicker layer of connective tissue that consists of collagenous and elastic fibers
Subcutaneous Layer (Hypodermis)
Located under the skin, contain blood vessels that supply nutrients to the skin
Melanocytes
Mature melanin cells located in the stratum basale
Ceruminous Glands
Secrete earwax
Hyperthermia
Abnormally high body temperature
Hypothermia
Abnormally low body temperature
Skin Functions
Protection, regulation, excretion, secretion, and sensation
Clot
Consists of fibrin, blood cells, and platelets
First Degree Burn (Sunburn)
Superficial, only injures epidermis
Second Degree Burn (Hot Liquid)
Deep, destroys epidermis and some dermis
Third Degree Burn (Flames)
Destroys epidermis, dermis, and accessory structures
Shallow Cut
Epithelial cells divide more rapidly to fill gap
Deep Cut
Blood vessels break at the dermis or subcutaneous layer
