Epidermis (Outer Layer)
Stratified squamous epithelium
Dermis (Inner Layer)
Composed of dense irregular connective tissue
Subcutaneous Layer (Hypodermis)
Binds the skin to the underlying muscles and bones in the body
Melanocytes
Mature melanin cells located in the stratum basale
Ceruminous Glands
Secrete earwax
Hyperthermia
Abnormally high body temperature
Hypothermia
Abnormally low body temperature
Skin Functions
Protection, regulation, excretion, secretion, and sensation
What does a clot consist of?
Consists of fibrin, blood cells, and platelets
First Degree Burn (Sunburn)
Superficial, only injures epidermis
Second Degree Burn (Hot Liquid)
Deep, destroys epidermis and some dermis
Third Degree Burn (Flames)
Destroys epidermis, dermis, and accessory structures
Shallow Cut
Epithelial cells divide more rapidly to fill gap
Eccrine Sweat Glands
Open directly onto the skin’s surface
Apocrine Sweat Glands (Open Into Hair Follicle)
Located in armpit and groin area, respond to emotional stress
Arrector Pili
Shift position of hair follicles
