Integumentary System Flashcards
What are the 3 layers of the skin called?
Epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous layer
What produces sebum?
The sebaceous gland
List 3 functions of the skin
Protection, sensation, excretion, synthesis of vitamin D, blood reservoir, and regulate body temperature.
Are all bacteria on our skin harmful?
No we have bacteria on our skin that are harmless called residents. However, transient bacteria may be harmful.
Athletes foot and ringworm are examples of _____________ skin infections.
Fungal
Which is the outer layer of the skin called?
Epidermis
Which layer of the skin is mainly made up of connective tissue?
Dermis
What are some functions of normal flora of the skin?
Lower pH level of skin to inhibit transients/pathogens, excretes antibacterial chemicals, competing for space/nutrients, stimulates immune response to fight pathogens.
Outline the role of the skin in temperature regulation
A decrease can be achieved by: sweating/panting, reducing activity, finding a cool place/taking clothes off & dilation of dermal arteriole.
Increase: increasing muscle activity/shivering, finding a warm place/putting more clothes on & constriction of dermal arterioles.
Describe the maintenance of homeostasis of body temperature.
The hypothalamus in the brain sets and maintains the body’s ‘normal’ temperature.
