INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM Flashcards
The set of organs that forms the external
covering of the body and protects it from many threats such as infection,
desiccation, abrasion, chemical assault and radiation damage.
Integumentary system
What is skin made of?
A thickened keratinized epithelium
made of multiple layers of cells that is largely impervious to water.
excrete wastes and regulate body temperature
Sweat glands
Serve as warning sensors, allowing the
body to move away from noxious stimuli.
Somatosensory receptors and nociceptors
It is the largest organ of the body. It also protects us from microbes and the other external factors, helps regulate our body temperature, and is responsible for sensations of touch, heat, and cold.
Skin
Three layers of skin
Epidermis
Dermis
Deeper Subcutaneous tissue bHyprodermis)
outermost layer of skin, provides a waterproof barrier
Epidermis
beneath the epidermis contains connective
tissue, hair follicles, oil glands and sweat glands.
Dermis
made of fat and connective
tissue
deeper subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis
skin’s color is created by special cells called
Melanocytes
produce the pigment melanin
Melanocytes
Where is melanocytes located?
Epidermis
Types of cells in the skin
Keratinocytes
Melanocytes
Langerhans cells
Merkel cells
most abundant type of cell of the epidermis. They are responsible for the synthesis of the protein keratin. originate from the basal layer.
Keratinocytes
present throughout the basal layer of the epidermis. responsible for the production of melanin. helps to protect the body from ultraviolet radiation present in sunlight that can damage the DNA of the skin cells.
