integument structure Flashcards
what are the layers of the skin (3)
- epidermis
- dermis
- hypodermis
what is the process of keratinization?
- cells pushed up from the basal layer to the epidermis layer
- produce tough keratin, the tough, fibrous, waterproof protein that gives skin it’s resiliency and strength
what is the process of pigmentation?
caused by the presence of, or lack of, melanin granules
what are the features of the paw pads
- paw pads are the thick layers and connective tissue and exocrine sweat glands
- the outer surface is the toughest skin on the body
- has all five epidermal layers
what are the features of the planum nasale
“nose”
- top of the nose in cats, pigs, and dogs
- has three epidermal layers
what are the parts of the hair follicle?
- hair shaft - visible above the skin
- hair root - buried within the skin
- hair follicle - anchors the hair
what is the hair growth cycle?
- Anagen phase: cells are added at the base of the root, hair lengthens
- Catagen phase: period of transition between anagen and telogen phases
- Telogen phase: maximum length of hair is achieved, hair stops growing, follicle shortens, & hair is held in resting place
what are the three types of hair
- primary or guard hair
- secondary or wool-type hair
- tactile (or “sinus”) hairs
Primary “guard” hair functions
straight or arched; thicker and longer than secondary hairs
Secondary “wool-type” hairs
“puppy coat”
softer and shorter than primary hairs; wavy or bristled in the dog
Tactile “sinus” hair
contain numerous sensory ending, commonly known as whiskers (can also be intermixed throughout coat)
List the three sebaceous glands
- sweat glands
- tail glands
- anal sacs
function of sweat glands
helps cool the body through evaporation
function of tail glands
communication, territory marking, helps identify one another with scent
function of anal sacs
line with sebaceous and apocrine glands, when defecation occurs some to all contents are expressed
