What is insurance
Provides protection against financial loss.
Dental insurance program
A contract between the client’s employer and the insurance carrier, NOT between the insurance carrier and the dentist.
Subscriber or guarantor
An employee who has subscribed for benefits through the employer
Insured
A person who holds insurance
Dependants
Any person covered under a plan but not the subscriber
Ex. Spouse and children
Carrier
Another name for an insurance company
Idemity contract
A type of insurance in which payment is given in compensation for loss
Claims experience
The frequent insurance claims paid out regularly
Premium
The amount of money that an individual or business must pay for an insurance policy.
Normally deducted from pay
Co-payment
Prevents abuse of insurance benefits by requiring the insured to pay a portion of the dental services.

Deductible
A set amount that the subscriber must pay before benefit coverage takes effect.
