Instrument Flying Fundamentals Flashcards
What are the three fundamental skills an instrument pilot must have?
- Instrument Scan (Cross-Check)
- Instrument Interpretation
- Airplane Control
What are the four four fundamentals of flight?
- Straight & Level
- Climb
- Descent
- Turn
Do all airplane attitude comprise of a combination or pitch, bank, and power?
Yes
Name the common scan errors:
- Omission (Resultant: leveling off of a climb by establishing level attitude on AI without checking effect on Alt.)
- Emphasis (Relying to heavily on one instrument
- Fixation (Resultant: stare at DG when approaching a level out while disregarding other instruments)
What are the pitch instruments?
Airspeed Indicator, Attitude Indicator, Altimeter, Vertical Speed Indicator
What are the bank instruments?
Attitude Indicator, Heading Indicator, Indirectly (Turn Coordinator)
What are the power instruments?
Airspeed Indicator, Manifold Pressure Gauge, Tachometer
When in level flight, changes should be made with the attitude indicator, and should not exceed what?
half, full, or one and one-half bar width deflections
Altitude corrections of less than 100 feet while in level flight should be used by what amount of pitch change?
One-half bar width change
Altitude corrections of more than 100 feet while in level flight should be used by what amount of pitch change?
One full bar width change until the altitude change is within 100 feet, then one-half bar change
The rate of return should not exceed what compared to the altitude correction?
It should not exceed double the altitude correction. This will give you at least 30 seconds until the correct altitude is achieved.
Is the airplane more stable in pitch or bank?
Pitch
T/F For heading corrections of 5 degrees of less, keep ailerons neutral and use rudder pedals
True
T/F In a turn, restrict the degrees of bank to half the amount you want to turn, but not more than standard rate.
True
When should the pitch attitude be slowly changed to an attitude that will result in level flight after a climb?
Ten percent of the rate of climb shown on the VSI
T/F Keep climb power in after level off until within 5 knots of cruise airspeed.
True
When descending at a specified airspeed and rate, with intentions of leveling off at the same airspeed, when should you add power?
10% of the rate of descent indicated on the VSI
When descending at a specified airspeed and rate, with intentions of leveling off at a higher airspeed, when should you add power?
20-30% of the rate of descent indicated on the VSI
What difference in altitude signifies ATC that your altitude is off?
300’
How many degrees per second is a standard rate turn?
3 degrees per second
What is the estimate of degrees bank needed to maintain a standard-rate turn?
(speed in knots / 10) + 7
Does an airplane on a northerly heading in reference to the magnetic compass lead or lag?
Lag
The amount of lead or lag of the magnetic compass depends on what? What is the average for the U.S.?
It changes depending on the latitude, but average is 30 degrees
Is wind correction added to assigned headings given by atc?
Yes
Seeing lightening and then hearing thunder…
5 sec difference for every mile away
