Instrument Departure Flashcards
The ENTIRE IFR system is built to (2)
- Keep airplanes from hitting each other
- Keep airplanes from hitting terrain
Takeoff Minimums:
Who establishes takeoff minimums for every airport and what are they published as?
FAA establishes takeoff minimums for every airport with published SIDs.
Who must abide by Takeoff Minimums?
What if they’re not published?
Do Part 91 aircraft required to comply with established takeoff minimums?
1&2 engines -
3 and up -
Helicopters -
Air Carriers (135,121 etc.) must abide by them.
Part 91 are NOT REQUIRED
When they are not published see 91.175
1&2 engines - 1 sm vis.
3 and up - 1/2 sm vis.
Helicopters - 1/2 sm vis.
Take Alternates (91.103/135/217/121/67)
Which are lower takeoff minimums or landing minimums?
When are they required?
What are they to prevent ?
Takeoff minimums are lower than landing.
Required for air carrier ops, but a good idea for Pt. 91
Made for if an emergency occurs during takeoff.
What is a Departure Procedure?
A pre-planned route that provides a transition from the departure airport to the enroute structure.
What is the purpose of Departure Procedures? (3)
Obstacle Protection
Efficient Track Routing
Reduced Pilot/Controller Workloads
What kinds of DPs are there?
Standard Instrument Departures
Obstacle Departure Procedures
Where and When are DPs published? (ODP) (3)
Airport has to have a SIAP
When Standard IFR departure procedure will not clear obstacles or;
- if deemed necessary by ATC to alleviate congestion
- If nothing penetrates the obstruction slope, you can do a SID aka Diverse Departure
If something penetrates the OCS/OIS a DP is published.
Obstacle Clearance Slope.
Based on what ratio?
Establishes an obstacle clearance zone of ___nm?
Based on a 40:1 ratio or 152 nm
Establishes 48 nm obstacle clearance zone.
Obstacle Identification Slope
Higher/Lower climb gradient required?
Higher/Lower Takeoff Minimums?
Higher Both
Calculating a Required Climb Rate?!
Planned Climbout GS / 60 X Required Climb = Required climb rate.
