FARs (Definitions and Abbreviations) Flashcards
What constitutes a ceiling ?
Height above the earth’s surface of the lowest layer of clouds or obscuring phenomena that is reported as “broken”, “overcast”, or “obscuration”.
Decision Altitude/Decision Height
DA/DH
Definition:
Applies to what kind of approach?
Which is read off of the altimeter?
Can you descend below the DH in the process of going missed?
How does DH contrast with MDA?
Height at which a decision must be made to continue or execute missed approach
Applies to Precision approaches and Non-precision approaches using an glidepath (e.g. LPV and LNAV/VNAV)
DA is read off of the altimeter
Yes, you can descend below DH while going missed.
Approach minimums are based on flight/reported visibility?
Flight Visibility
What weather conditions constitute IFR conditions?
What would signify IFR during the day?
In flight what is IFR?
On the ground (controlled airport): below 1000’ ceiling or 3 SM visibility
▪Rotating beacon “supposed” to be on
▪In flight: anything less than VMC
Fuel Requirements for IFR (91.167)
Enough fuel to:
Fly to your destination
Fly To your Alternate
Continue for 45 minutes @ cruising speed
1-2-3 Rule
1 hour before and 1 hour after
2,000 ft. ceilings or above
3 statute miles
You are required to have an alternate based on the 1-2-3 rule UNLESS
Airport has an instrument approach
AND
appropriate reports forecast 1 hour before and 1 hour after.
What do you use if you don’t have a TAF?
Area Forecast (FA)
What part aircraft can file IFR without an instrumental approach?
Which can not?
Pt. 91 can
Pt. 35 & 21
If you are flying with a NON-WAAS GPS and plan on flying a GPS approach, your destination can have a gps approach but needs ______________.
Non-WAAS only.
If you are flying with a NON-WAAS GPS and plan on flying a GPS approach, your destination can have a gps approach but needs an alternate form of approach.
Criteria for an alternate?
Precision Approach
Non-Precision Approach
What are the only approaches that count as precision in this situation?
Precision Approach - 600ft. 2sm
Non-Precision Approach - 800 ft. 2sm
Only ILS and PAR.
LPV and LNAV are not considered precision for this.
Can you have an alternate with no approach?
Yes, but you must have CIG and VIS that permit transition from MEA/MOCA to the ground VFR.
What are some other considerations for choosing an alternate?
- runway distance
- services
- convenience
How long are instrument rating results good for ?
2 years
IFR Currency
Within the preceding 6 months you must log:
6 approaches
1 hold
Tracking and intercepting with electronic NAV
