National Afforestation and Eco-Development Board

A

Set up by Ministry of Environment and Forest in 1992.

Is responsible for promoting afforestation, tree planting, ecological restoration and eco-development activities in the country, with special attention to the degraded forest areas and lands adjoining the forest areas, national parks, sanctuaries.

Set up National Afforestation Program in 2002.

CAMPA : Compensatory Afforestation Fund ManagementandPlanning Authority (CAMPA)

A

Forest (Conservation) Act of 1980 requires that non-forest land, equal to the size of the forest being diverted for developmental work, is afforested.
Central Government in exercise of powers conferred under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 constituted CAMPA.
To remove ad-hocism in actions and to give CAMPA a concrete shape, the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Act, 2016 was passed.

Compensatory fund: It establishes Compensatory Afforestation Fund (CAF): The National Compensatory Afforestation Fund under the Public Account of India, and a State Compensatory Afforestation Fund under the Public Account of each state.

Social Forestry

A

The national commission on agriculture first used the term ‘social forestry ‘in 1976.
Social forestry can be divided into:
Farm forestry – individual farmers were to plant trees on their own land to meet their domestic needs.
Community forestry – Rising of trees on community land with government support. Extension forestry-Planting of trees on the sides of road, canals, railways, and wastelands. It essentially means increasing the boundaries of forest.

Eco-Mark

A

Eco-mark is a voluntary labelling scheme for easily identifying environment friendly products.
Scheme is one of India’s earliest efforts in environmental standards, launched in 1991, even before the 1992 Rio Summit in which India participated.

The scheme was launched by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, and is administered by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which also administers the Indian Standards Institute (ISI) mark quality label, a requirement for any product to gain the Eco-mark label.

Biodiversity Conservation and Rural Livelihood Improvement Project (BCRLIP)

Project was negotiated with the World Bank on 2011. Implemented by the Forest/Wildlife Department of the respective State Government.
Aim is conserving biodiversity in selective landscapes while improving rural livelihood through participatory approaches.
Conservation and Survey Division in the Ministry of Environment & Forest would be overseeing and coordinating the Project at the country level.

National Clean Energy Fund

A

Launched in Budget 2010-11
It gets money from clean energy cess on coal(carbon tax) produced in India and coal imported in India, currently Rs 400 per tonne of coal.

Used for funding and encouraging entrepreneurship, research and innovative projects in clean energy technology – example programmes under NAPCC, reforestation programmes.

Mangroves for Future

A

It is a collaboration between multiple partners, including governments, NGO, research institutes etc. It is co-chaired by the IUCN and UNDP. Member countries: India, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Pakistan, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The goal is to promote an integrated ocean-wide approach to coastal management and to building the resilience of ecosystem-dependent coastal communities.
