Animal Welfare Board
It is a statutory body
● Well-known humanitarian Smt. Rukmini Devi Arundale was its first chairperson.
● Established in 1962 under Section 4 of The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act,1960.
● Ministry of Environment and Forests
● HQ Ballabhgarh in Faridabad District
It is an advisory body
● It provides grants to Animal Welfare Organisations.
● It frames a range of rules on how animals ought to be humanely treated everywhere. It has also frequently litigated to have stricter laws to ensure animals were not unduly harassed or tortured.
It comes under Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy.
Central Zoo Authority
Autonomous statutory body
● Constituted under the Wild Life (Protection) Act.
● Affiliate member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA)- umbrella organisation found in 1935 in Gland
● Main objective: To complement the national effort in conservation of wildlife.
● It also regulates the exchange of animals of endangered category among zoos.
National Biodiversity Authority
Established in 2003 to implement India’s Biological Diversity Act (2002)
● Statutory, Autonomous Body
● Headquarters: Chennai, Tamil Nadu
● Structure: The Authority, Secretariat, SBBs, BMCs and Expert Committees
● India Biodiversity Award 2018 was conferred by the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA).
It performs facilitative, regulatory and advisory function for the Government of India on issues of conservation, sustainable use of biological resources and fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising out of the use of biological resources.
● Biodiversity Heritage Sites: State Government in consultation with local bodies, can notify, areas of biodiversity importance as biodiversity heritage sites.
Wildlife Crime Control Bureau
Statutory multi-disciplinary body under the MoEFCC to combat organized wildlife crime in the country.
Established in June 2007 by amending the Wildlife (Protection) Act (WLPA), 1972
Headquartered in New Delhi and has five regional offices at Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Jabalpur.
United Nation Environment has awarded Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) with Asia Environment Enforcement Awards, 2018
National Plan For Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems
For conservation of lakes and wetlands, the Ministry was earlier implementing two separate Centrally sponsored schemes, namely the ‘National Wetlands Conservation Programme’ (NWCP) and the ‘National Lake Conservation Plan’ (NLCP). They were merged in 2013.
The scheme aims at holistic conservation and restoration of lakes and wetlands for achieving the desired water quality enhancement, besides improvement in biodiversity and ecosystem through an integrated and multidisciplinary approach and a common regulatory framework.
National Ganga river basin Authority
Replace in 2016 with National Ganga Council
Constituted under Section 3(3) of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986
● The Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation(MoWR, RD & GR) is the nodal Ministry for the NGRBA ● Chaired by the Prime Minister and has as its members the Union Ministers concerned, the Chief Ministers of the States through which Ganga flows
Regulation of activities aimed at prevention, control and abatement of pollution in Ganga to maintain its water quality
● Maintenance of minimum ecological flows in the river Ganga
National Board For Wildlife (2003)
Statutory Organization constituted under the WPA, 1972.
● It is chaired by the Prime Minister and its vice chairman is Minister of Environment.
It serves as apex body to review all wildlife-related matters and approve projects in and around national parks and sanctuaries.
● Members include Parliament Members, NGOs, eminent conservationists, ecologists.
National Council for Rejuvenation, Protection and Management of River Ganga aka National Ganga Council (replaced National Ganga River Basin Authority in 2016)
All government schemes related to Ganga fall under this.
Abatement of pollution and maintenance of Ganga and its tributaries.
Chairman by PM, Vice Chairmen Minister for Jalshakti, other Union Ministers, State ministers, Vice Chairman NITI AAYOG.
Implementation of Clean Ganga and Namami Gange Program.
Non Statutory Body.
