Institutional Agression Flashcards
Importation model
Agg is because of the characteristics prisoners being inside with them
They have a certain way of behaving (why they’re in prison)
This gets applies to their new surroundings
Personal factors before being locked up effect the aggression inside
Mills, kroner and weeks
Canadian prison
Alcohol dependency scale
Inmates who had higher dependence associated with high agg
Characteristics from outside have influenced their agg inside
Demographic variable
Has an influence on agg
Black young males tend to be the most aggressive
Kanes and Janus
Inmates who has been unemployed for longer and had lower levels of education were more likely to be aggressive
Factors before being locked up affects the level of agg
Kanes and Janus (disenfranchised)
Groups that were more likely to be agg in prison were more likely to be separated from the mainstream society before prison
Away from a society that promoted pro social behaviour and in a subculture where agg is valued
This value of agg influences them to be agg when in prison
They have been disenfranchised
Irwin and Cressy
Found support for different subcultures in prisons
Criminal - Not aggressive/valued others
Convict- Mafia/dangerous/valued agg
Straight- White collar/least agg
Situation model
Stayed the prison environment plays a role in agg
Made up of the deprivation model, popcorn model and management model
Deprivation
It’s thought that prisoner become aggressive when they are deprived of things
The deprivation leads to stress and the prisoners relive this stress by being aggressive
Sykes
Found 5 deprivations
Liberty - rejection from society + have to ask to do anything
Autonomy - no power, told no but not why = helpless and frustrated = aggression
Goods and services- emphasis on possessions makes it difficult once taken away, feel like a failure
Heterosexual- part of identity, homosexual possibly = anxiety
Security- fear of safety, others aggressive
Agg is a way of regaining some power over social control
Implications - books/cooking
Popcorn model
1st act is like 1st piece of popcorn to pop
Sets of a chain reaction
Prisoners become agg when Heat is applied
Best thing to do is to figure out what led to Heat being applied
If environment sorted = no aggression
Overcrowding linked with a significant popcorn effect
Magaree
Found agg incidents correlated + with amount of space
Over crowding = more management = few opportunities to interact
Gov strategies to improve environmental
Management
Agg occurs due to failed management, high staff turnover and lack of discipline
McCorkle
Investigated strength of deprivation and management in explaining agg
371 prison looking at individual and collective agg
Found that management was the best model to explain agg behaviour
